DETAILED ITINERARY

An Introduction

This is a driven safari with a private vehicle and guide. This type of travel allows you to fully appreciate the subtle changes in the environment as you move from one area to the next by land, and learn about the forces which drove these changes and shaped the contrasting landscape around you. The thrill is not only in the destination, but the journey itself.

In contrast to the constant comings and goings of most fly-in lodge safaris, the guided lodge safari offers the traveler a welcome sense of continuity, and opportunity to get to know your guide and fellow travel companions, enhancing your experience. Small groups (max 9 guests) ensure that you enjoy exclusivity and personal attention (ideal for families and private groups).  The flexibility of a driven safari allows access to remote areas offering a unique and diverse safari experience. A key advantage of having a private vehicle and guide is the flexibility this offers, allowing for extended game drives outside the typical lodge routine. This safari is the prefect balance between adventure and relaxation.

2 Nights      MOREMI CROSSING, Okavango Delta

The guide will meet the guests at Maun airport, where the guided safari starts with a flight into the Okavango Delta (about 25 minutes).

Moremi Crossing is located on an Island called Ntswi near the most southern part of Chief’s Island. As you fly over the Delta you can see the intricate twisting and turning of the waterways and the ever-changing colours where dry land meets water. The channels around Moremi Crossing offer far reaching vistas of the Moremi floodplain, grasslands and marginal woodlands interspersed with Mokolwane palm islands.

Moremi Crossings provides comfortable accommodation in 16 vintage en-suite safari tents, each with its own private wooden deck. The main area consists of a large open plan split level deck that offers spectacular views over the Boro River onto Chiefs Island. The dining room, bar and lounge are covered by a large thatched roof with the decked areas leading out to the pool. The whole camp is shaded by magnificent Llala palms, giant ebony, mangosteen, sausage and giant fig trees. The camp has 24hr solar powered electricity/ lightning.

Moremi Crossing is a water based camp and therefore access to the camp from the airstrip is either by mokoro or moroboat. Activities on offer include mokoro excursions, guided walks and water levels permitting sunset cruises by motorboat. All these activities give the guests the chance to experience the Okavango Delta and its game from a very different slower and closer perspective.

After two nights at Moremi Crossing the group flies together with their guide back to Maun. Here the driven guided tour starts. The drive to Meno a Kwena takes about 1h30 – 2 hours.

2 nights            MENO A KWENA TENTED CAMP, Boteti River

Meno A Kwena, meaning tooth of the crocodile, borders Makgadikgadi National Park in close proximity to Nxai Pan National Park. The camp is situated on tribal land and has been built on a cliff edge overlooking the Boteti River.

The rustic camp is built in the tradition of eastern African tented camps, simple yet personal with attention to detail featuring many interesting artefacts and photographs on display in the main lodge. Meno A Kwena offers seven meru-style safari tents, simply furnished with comfortable bedding and hanging space. Separate to the each tent are private open air bathrooms with a traditional bucket shower (filled with piping hot water for daily showers) and a flush toilet. Each tent features a private sitting area, which offers a beautiful view over the river bed. The main lodge has an dining area, bar and lounge with small library. A covered seating area at the edge of the escarpment is popular, providing guests with a breathtaking view over a waterhole that attracts many zebra and wildebeest herds during the migration months (June to November). There is a small plunge pool built with natural rocks and a game viewing hide which offers a close yet safe view across the waterhole.

Activities at Meno A Kwena include walking and cultural activities with a local community guide. Game drives are also available, varying from short trips to the nearby Ngandi Community Trust Area to full-day excursions with a picnic into Makgadikgadi National Park or Nxai Pan National Park. Meno A Kwena’s informal atmosphere makes for a very relaxing stay.

The drive from Meno a Kwena to Khwai will be via Maun. The first section to Maun takes about 1h30, and the onward drive to Khwai another 3 hours.

3 nights       KHWAI TENTED CAMP, Khwai Concession, Botswana

This provides the perfect setting of a wilderness area where a community lives in harmony with nature and wildlife. The magnificent Khwai river is the hub for some of the most outstanding wildlife viewing both in the Moremi Game Reserve and bordering Khwai community area.

Khwai Tented Camp is a small 10 bedded tented camp situated along this life supporting river. It is a luxury, semi permanent, Hemingway style camp. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with flushing toilette. It is designed for the luxury camping seeker who is looking for the real African experience in a simple and yet understated tented safari experience.

The main focus is the wildlife experience including excursions to the legendary Moremi Game Reserve. Activities on offer include game drives, nature walks, night drives and cultural village outings to the old bushman village of Khwai. The area is rich in a wide variety of wildlife species including elephants, buffalo, zebra, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, eland, sable, hippo, hyena and various other nocturnal species.

From Khwai the group drives to Linyanti. The drive will take about 5 hours, the group will stop for a picnic-lunch enroute.

2 nights       LINYANTI BUSH CAMP, Linyanti

Linyanti Bush Camp is an intimate tented camp on the banks of the Linyanti marsh in a private reserve which borders the western boundary of Chobe National Park in the Chobe Enclave. The camp offers an exclusive safari experience away from the main tourist routes of Chobe.

Linyanti Bush Camp offers simple African elegance, offering guests modern comforts whilst retaining an authentic wilderness atmosphere. The camp has six tastefully furnished rooms under canvas with en-suite bathrooms and the main lodge area is raised on wooden decking with a dining area, small library, bar and lounge, overlooking the Linyanti floodplains and marsh. There a plans for a small swimming pool to be added to the camp by 2010.

Activities from the camp consist of game drives including night drives and walking. The Linyanti area is best known for its large populations of elephant and buffalo that congregate in vast numbers especially during the dry season. In addition lion, sable, roan, leopard, wild dog, and a number of the plains game may be seen and the surrounding swamps and marshes are home to lechwe, hippo, crocodile and sitatunga.
